Ba-Ba-Boom! Presents: Batucada Basics, Saturday 12th March, CAI
£2 before 11, £4 after. 9pm-4am
Passion drives Batucada Basics. Passion for fine Brazilian tunes and full-on parties. Here at Ba-Ba-Boom! we’ve been fronting Brazilian parties in Cardiff since late ’04, developing the Batucada Basics name in 2005. After a break we’re now bringing our own nights of Brazilian Funk, Rio Hip-Hop, São Paulo DnB and Sizzling Samba to the Cardiff Arts Institute. Saturday 12th March, just as the echoes of the Rio carnival fade, we’ll be showcasing an amazing mix of live acts in the first of what should be a set of semi-regular nights:
12 midnight : SAMBA GALEZ : Massive live Samba bateria with thundering Brazilian drumming
11pm: Live CAPOEIRA performance : Contre Mestre Claudio Campos
10pm: Samba dance class
DJ-wise we draw up a broad spectrum of Brazilian music, from the funk, bossa and samba of the 1970s through to the contemporary turn with Drum ‘n’ Base, House and Rio’s own electro hip-hop style baile funk. Old school artists like Jorge Ben and Elza Soares played up against Marcelo D2, Edu K and DJ Marky, and always a good dose of strong, pounding Batucada. Resident DJs are drawn from the local crews with an eye to the global, with Candela, Juju Nations, Ba-Ba-Boom and Triban all represented on the night, all keeping it 100% Brazil.
Themed visuals and Brazil’s national cocktail – the Caipirinha – flowing from the bar get the passions running. Batucada Basics and old Brazilian parties were how Ba-Ba-Boom got going. Recently we’ve been more associated with bringing Afrobeat, Klezmar and Bhangra bands to the city. But it’s time to return to our roots, and bring back our most trusted of parties. Six years on people still go on about those early events, in the top room of the now defunct Model Inn. Stoked with a proper venue, a proper stage and a proper sound-system, this new CAI residency is going to be amazing.
