Electric Sheep: Day 1

A celebration of the Electronic Music scene in Wales, which is stronger than it’s ever been at the moment. From post Hip-hop circuit bashers to a new generation of House and Garage experimentalists, we bring some of the key artists from the scene together for 3 days of forward thinking music at Cardiff Arts Institute. As well as our Secret Headliner we have these incredible DJ / Producers.

MONKY (HOYA HOYA / ROBOX NEOTECH)
Blurring the boundaries between Hip-hop, Garage, Dubstep and House, Monky is undoubtedly one of the most forward thinking and brilliant producer / DJs in the country right now. Since his Hip-hop days and early Dubstep outings with long term sparring partner Stagga, he has consistently pushed boundaries and created some truly remarkable music. Already on many big DJ’s radars, his single on Robox Neotech last year took him further to the forefront of his field and this year sees new releases on labels such as Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label, Illum Sphere’s Hoya Hoya imprint, and Rossi B’s Heavy Artillery. Monky has never stepped behind the decks at Cardiff Arts Institute and not torn the place down so we look forwards to having him back once again.

DIDZ + CHICO (TEN THOUSAND YEN)
Despite their early Grime backgrounds Didz (aka Diddy aka Ill Diddy) + Chico have always hinted at a deeper more uplifting side in their stunning DJ sets and productions. Stalwarts of the Cardiff music scene, Didz remained largely in the shadows and Chico was better known for his outings on the microphone until Doc Daneeka’s Ten Thousand Yen label released their anthemic garage track, ‘Something New’ which was rinsed by the likes of Marcus Nasty, Seb Chew, Julio Bashmore, TRG, and Mosca.

MR HEALAN
Definitely showcasing a more Hip-hop approach to future music, Mr Healan has been making a strong name for himself on the Welsh scene supporting acts such as Daedelus, Bullion and James Blake, whilst his productions have received play on BBC Radio 1, Radio Wales and 1Xtra and being picked up by the likes of Distance, Starkey and Darkhouse Family.

CHROME KIDS
As well as being strong on the blog scene for a while with their output of ‘post Hip-hop’ productions and Bass heavy beats, every now and then they escape the confines of the virtual world and bring their mutated funk into real life. Debuting at Huw Stephen’s Swn Festival they’ve since ripped up Glastonbury and Bestival, recorded mixes for Rob Da Bank’s show on BBC Radio 1 and In New DJs We Trust on BBC 1Xtra amongst others and have been strong supporters of the Welsh Electronic scene in general.
