Colourbox presents a glorious treat for all you groovers and shakers, welcoming non other than Mr Bill Brewster, Dj History stalwart to come and entertain with his magic box of musical tricks…

Whether he’s taking the roof off a club with his unique selection of deep and tough house music, enchanting a backroom with a genre-bending set of disco, Balearic, rock and hip hop or playing chillout music by a pool in Ibiza, Bill is the man for all occasions.

Originally a chef, a football pundit (co-editor of fanzine When Saturday Comes) and record collector, he began DJing in in the late 80s, cutting his teeth playing at the infamous ‘Low Life’ warehouse parties in Harlem and the East Village when he moved to NYC to run DMC’s US operation. Anyone hearing Bill today can see how these New York roots shine through. For eclecticism, surprises, amazing unique music and sheer long-haul dedication to the dancefloor, he’s the man!

Having spent spent most of his life as a writer. Together with long-term pal Frank Broughton, he penned the definitive history of DJing in “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life”, contributing his acid Grimsby wit and encyclopaedic knowledge of music to just about every dance rag there is.

Renown an industry insider, he brought Twisted records to the UK and launched his own highly successful deep house label Forensic as well as heading up dance music’s basement at: www.djhistory.com In his spare Bill is often found in the studio, either with Fat Camp partner, Theo Noble, re-editing old disco, funk and rock records; or producing original music, running a small edit label Disco Sucks.

As his hero Kid Creole would say, “Annie I’m not your daddy”…

Springing back into action, Colourbox opens the doors of CAI once more for a Saturday night jam.

Getting down this month, we welcome some of South Wales’ finest purveyors of Disco, Soul, Funk & House to come and make you twitch your hips at Cardiff Arts Institute. Renown for their ever excellent parties and uber cool taste in music, the “Loose Joints” crew have been running their very own Saturday Night Jams for well over 5 years now, spinning a heady mix of anything goes.

Influenced by their love of Southport Soul and Moody Blues, Ritchie Moulton, Matthew Gobbett and Robert Needham have been laying down the soundtrack to weekend at various venues since they came together in a moody Newport basement over a love of all things vinyl and Luther Van Dross. Dj Toclifrench (Péchés Mignons) will also be joining as he continues his mission to spread the gospel of afro-latin-jazz funk. So, what you waiting for?

Colourbox and Cardiff Arts Institute are very pleased to invite the legend that is Mr Phat Phil Cooper (Nu Northern Soul / Sick Trumpet), one of the most respected British jocks during the 1990’s. From fourth division to premier league is how Phil likes to describe his breakthrough onto the music scene. Plucked from relative obscurity, DJing at Chester’s “Sweet” House music night in the North West of England to warm up DJ to the underground stars at Cream, Liverpool by Darren Hughes, promoter and visionary extraordinaire! All this happened in 1995 and the summer of 1996 saw Phil land the first of his many years’ residencies for Cream at Amnesia, Ibiza. Here Phil was allowed to flex his broad musical styles ranging from hip hop to deep house in his marathon 8 hour sets.

The mid-nineties blurred into the mid-naughties and along the way, Phil amassed a huge collection of music that led him to create theNu Northern Soul concept, a Sunday session of music presented in comfortable surroundings of a Liverpool boozer. Such was the night’s vibe and success, the heady heights of Ibiza’s Space Terrace came a calling!

These days you’ll find Phil in the homely surroundings of Chibuku Shake Shake, whilst also hosting his very own Karaoke Cruise further afield at the most excellent Garden Festival.
