‘With their mumbling vocals and growly guitars, facial fuzz and general air of dishevelment, Tribes appear to worship at the altar of Cobain and Co. Their track Whenever couldn’t be more Nevermind-ish if it tried, which presumably it won’t do because exertion would be antithetical to the slacker ethos. Their songs have choruses that sound like the bit in Smells Like Teen Spirit where Kurt went, “Hello, hello, hello”, in that sardonic droney manner that suggested sardonicism was his way of dealing with anguish and pain. He would have droned for America had he heard Tribes. ‘ -New Band of the day – Guardian
Based on a very simple concept – 12 hours, 12 topics, 12 pictures – this is an event centered around creativity and imagination and a lot of fun.

The first event was held in Cardiff in the summer of 2004 when 140 people took part, Since then it has established itself as regular fixture on the capital city’s cultural calendar. This year 400 people will take up the challenge of interpreting the topics each in their own way. Cardiff Arts Institute will act as a base for the event between 2pm and 6pm, so if you’re around, don’t be surprised if someone asks you to be in their picture!

The last twelve months have seen London three-piece IS TROPICAL make waves with their unique brand of dreamy pop, rapidly gaining fans in all corners of the globe from diehard indie kids to full on clubbers. We’re incredibly excited about this show especially as we know the cross-over audience that we get through our Friday shows..

IS TROPICAL came to international attention with the release of their debut single When O’ When released on Hit Club Records in January 2010. Produced by Al Al Al (The Big Pink / Klaxons), the single, together with their spectral live shows, saw the band attract the attention of fans and critics alike. They were soon signed to French music and fashion label Kitsuné (Digitalism/Two Door Cinema Club). The band entered the studio last autumn with Jimmy Robertson to record their debut album, the first fruits of this is the lush ‘SOUTH PACIFIC’ single. The band’s second release was mixed by LEXXX (Crystal Castles /Gwen Stefani) and was released on Kitsuné in November 2010. Around this time IS TROPICAL toured the UK and Europe as special guests of Klaxons, The Big Pink and Mystery Jets and have subsequently grown into a mesmerising live act, effortlessly combining a late night strobing club show with infectious, sing along pop songs.

The IS TROPICAL line up of SIMON MILNER (vocal/guitars/keys), GARY BARBER (vocals/guitars/keys) & DOMINIC APA (drums), will release their debut album on KITSUNÉ / COOPERATIVE MUSIC in April 2011.

IS TROPICAL plus support from MILLION WAY & Hemme Fatale..

What better way to prepare themselves for the rest of the year, than with holding an event to celebrate their success so far in helping both the Save The 100 Club and the Storm The Charts campaigns, as well as helping 998 other bands, DJs, promoters, labels and venues make money from their merchandise.

“Literary Death Match is teaming with the Cardiff Arts Institute to produce an epic LDM Cardiff debut, in what promises to be one of the most thrilling in the event’s five-year history. The night, featured in 32 cities around the world, will bring together four authors to read their most electric writing for seven minutes or less before a panel of three all-star judges.

After each pair of readers, the judges take turns spouting hilarious, off-the-wall commentary — in the categories of literary merit, performance and intangibles — about each story, poem or otherwise, then select their favorite to advance to the finals.

The two finalists then compete in the Literary Death Match finale, which trades in the show’s literary sensibility for an absurd and comical climax to determine who takes home the Literary Death Match Cardiff crown.”

To get a quick sense of the event, here’s a video: www.literarydeathmatch.com/storage/sizzle/index.html.

Tuesday MAY 10th 2011 – 8pm

More details to come.
