Help us help our neighbours.

Why not use our free Art Car-Bootique Bus? It’ll be stopping at Milgi, Cardiff Arts Institute and Chapter all day from 10am-4pm. If you do drive, please use one of the local, free car parks and not our neighbours spaces! We’ve got lots of bicycle racks and we’re easy to get to by bus (17, 18, 33 from town). We really appreciate your help. x

No Sweat is our weekly acoustic/folk/soul night here at Cardiff Arts Institute, providing you with a luscious mid-week chill. It’s free entry, so no excuses to miss these two incredible acts…

JULIE SOULFUL & STAINLESS STEVE

Julie Gordon is one of the great undiscovered musical secrets of Cardiff. Julie currently makes her living braiding and styling hair at an intimate little place near Tiger Bay, but has been singing her heart out for as long as she can remember. With a voice that’s a cross between Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson, and a collection of stunning original songs, she is a local treasure.

http://www.myspace.com/juliesoulful

Julie is currently supported by the Stainless Steve Band who are based in Cardiff and create contemporary music for our challenging times. Paying homage to the likes of Mose Allison and Dan Hicks, our songs cover some ‘big issues’ (from global warming to modern relationships) with a humorous touch, and aim to entertain and intrigue with a spicy mix of Blues, Folk and Jazz – interspersed with interpretations of some all-time great songs.

http://www.myspace.com/bluesitems

LOWRI EVANS

Lowri is a stunning bilingual jazz-folk singer, who has previously graced the No Sweat stage both at CAI and WATUSI Festival. What makes Lowri Evans unique is her beautiful Welsh voice, distinctive and powerful delivering a highly original blend of blues, contemporary folk and pop. She has this wonderful ability to blend the two languages in both her live and recorded performances.

Here, Lowri plays One Way Ticket at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, from her amazing 2009 album of the same title.

CANTALOOP
http://www.cantaloop.co.uk/
Since releasing their Gavin Monaghan (The Editors, The Twang) produced album I.C.H.I.L.E. back in 2007, Funk fanatics Cantaloop have dropped some killer tracks such as ‘Real Thing’ (remixed by The Fun Lovin’ Criminals) and toured various festivals such as, Glastonbury, the Montreux Jazz Festival, Blue Balls Festival, Larmer Tree Festival and Ashton Court. They bridge both the festival vibe of our Saturday nights and the B Boy ethos of ‘Ya Don’t Stop’ just perfectly.

“Live stands out from the crowd. Well worth checking out… party-centric stuff!” (Mojo)

“Cantaloop’s fusion of funk and hip-hop pitches itself in a territory bounded by the free form jams of Phish and the social awareness of The Specials, tinged with the spacious blues of Eric Bibb and the dive bombing rap ‘n’ scratch of Senser.” (Logo)

“will make you feel good for no particular reason at all and any band that can do that has to get bigged up.” ( Blues and Soul)

Check their track ‘Psycho Stalker’

DJ DSK
http://www.djdsk.com/
Originally from Britain but now residing in China, DJ DSK first became known through his vinyl releases on Second to None Records and Electrolab Records as well as a whole series of Hip-hop, Funk and Electro mix CDs. Since moving to China he has: been a DJ representative for Numark / Akai and Alesis; helped organise the Battle of the Year China and B-boy championships of China; and sat as a judge for the DMC China competition. He has also toured extensively around India, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Germany and of course his native UK.

DJ JAFFA
http://www.myspace.com/djjaffa
Hip-hop properly came to Cardiff back in the early to mid 80s. The first Hip-hop jam was on Queen Street when DJ Jaffa, a breakdancer since 1982 and DJ since 85, plugged his decks into Rudis Donut Store and invited any budding MCs to jump up. Since then Jaffa has been a cornerstone of the scene. He was signed up early to Jive Records (later the home of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears) alongside MC Eric (who would go on to join Technotronic and eventually become Me One) and has since DJ’d and produced for the likes of Keisha White, 365, E Dro, Tystion, Bench, Manchild and The Simpsons (yup as in Homer, Bart, etc). He currently holds the UK record for longest DJ set at 70 hours and has a never ending record bag of everything from Funk to Dubstep. A true legend and a great DJ.

As the sun has finally come out, DJ Jaffa has put together this great podcast using tracks that have Sun or Sunshine on the title.

It’s a funny old game poetry, seems that most of the time I see it live the only emotions it instigates is hardcore apathy or the urge to physically hurt said poet severely with their own pen. However there are a few out there who truly touch deeply into just the right emotions, Kate Tempest, a big name on the slam poetry scene is one of them.

So what you may ask are we bloody doing putting her on a Saturday night? Well there’s more to this poet than meets the eye, infact two more. Along with a damn fine jazz drummer and guitarist / bassist they make up Sound Of Rum. A band that fit just as well into the festival vibe of our Saturday nights as that other well known poetry crossover Dan Le Sac & Scroobius Pip, who incidentally are also on the same label – Sunday Best, ran by Bestival head honcho and Radio One late night music supremo Rob Da Bank. We very much look forwards to getting in full festie mode. Also Dregz, who has been a staple dancefloor filler at the Toucan for many years shall be paying us a special visit whilst I will no doubt be dropping a selection of Swing, Gypsy and Ska type tunes.

Plus if you arrive early enough (like from 4 in the afternoon) you’ll be able to catch the ‘Breakin’ Hearts B Girl Jam’ as the lady breakdancers get their competition on to the sounds of DJ Jaffa, DJ Veto and Mr Soulsbury.

Pangaea is paramount in the evolution of the sound and alongside his Hessle Audio compadres Untold and Ramadanman is one of the most important Dubstep producers out there at the moment. With elements of Techno, House, Funky, Tropical, Rave and more thrown into the mix and both an ear for beautiful music and an eye for the dancefloor it should be one of the most exciting sets we’ve seen at CAI for a while.

Listen / Download: Pangaea – BBC Radio 1 Mix

http://www.percussionlab.com/sets/pangaea/bbc_radio_1_mix

Just as exciting for me at the moment is what is the tunes coming out from Cardiff producer Monky. He’s also stepping away from the traditional Dubstep style and playing with sounds and rhythms in such an exciting way that it can only be good for this city.

Listen: Monkey – FutureMajikDubSoulVol1

To both compliment and contrast these fellas we have the Central Spillz crew, a fun bunch of Bristolian DJs and MCs who carry that perfect mix of party style jump up and deeper conscious stuff so that what they bring is a show rather than just a bunch of guys on a mic over Dubstep, also Drokkr from Ireland, who is from the sheer filth and fury brand of producers and will top the night of just perfect whilst on the warm up slot we have Adam Corner, a true connoisseur of the dancefloor who will make sure the place is just toasty for all involved.
