Nick Drake (1948 – 1974) was an English singer-songwriter and musician best known for his acoustic, autumnal songs. Although he failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, Drake’s work has grown steadily in stature, and has now reached such proportions that he will always be seen as a landmark, a beauty, a thread of creativity that will forever span the rapids of modern music.

Nick recorded only three albums in his short career and has since been seen as somewhat of a mystery. At the time he was largely unnoticed, considered to be too fragile and painful to engage the wilder audiences of the early 70s. Now, more than 30 years on, Nick Drake has become the most revered of all English singer/songwriters.

On March 21st, we celebrate the work of Nick Drake at the Cardiff Arts Institute, with a evening of songs performed by  Keith James and Rick Foot. Over the past seven years or so, Keith and Rick have gained substantial acclaim for bringing the fragile and beautiful music of Nick Drake into a live context.Giving re-birth and a human presence to one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the last 50 years.

CAI was chosen alongside Clwb Ifor Bach and Buffalo as the three most likely venues for the show and the decision was handed over to facebook to decide. If you haven’t heard the rallying cry or been to the facebook page to vote, you can’t have been online over the past four or five days.

In the dying hours of the competition – not wanting to rest on laurels, the CAI family created the following.

The winner is announced at 10am this morning, and if nothing else, it was invigourating seeing how passionately people care about independent venues in the ‘diff.

This video inspires me. Every so often I watch it and it lodges in my head for days. I could almost convince myself Bobby invented Beethoven.

I also love what he does. I think that’s his wife but I’m not sure.

Of his oeuvre, most people only know Don’t Worry Be Happy which is a pity because this kind of thing is better. He says “remember this?” because it’s a James Brown song.

What does this have to do with Cardiff Arts Institute, I hear you cry? Well, I’m testing the new blogging system. Good news is, everything seems to be in order. W00t! We’d like to see this website as a kind of freerange media channel connected the venue. (And I guess this is the sort of panache and flair I hope to be channelling into our new Mucky Chops night every Sunday).

For bandmates Lindani Buthelezi, Mpumi Mcata, Molefi Makananise and Tshepang Ramoba it’s a simple and tough philosophy: every gig, everything at stake. They have shared stages in North America and Europe with artists as celebrated and disparate as Femi Kuti, Santigold, Dirty Projectors, Michael Franti and Cody Chesnutt; they have played festivals like Sasquatch and Soweto Arts Festival; and Ramoba has been celebrated by Billboard as “the best musician” at SXSW. It’s an inspiring juxtapose from that day when a Jo-burg gig hung in the balance. But to witness the frenetic energy and soaring celebration of a BLK JKS gig is to know that they have maintained that same ideology.”

We are incredibly proud to welcome BLK JKS to the CAI on 27th November, in an evening curated by Three Syllables featuring a DJ set by Midwife Crisis.

The Correspondents have played for Secret Carnival before at the Globe on Albany Rd at our Outer Space party and for those of you that were there they will need no introduction. You may have seen them at one of their many festival shows this year.  The Correspondents. MC Mr Bruce and DJ/Producer Mr Chuckles collaborate to make Hip Hop for the 1930s, Big Band music for the 00s. Splicing swing samples with squelchy synths over dusty drum loops they’ve depicted a modern day journey into time of rogue’s, lust, affordable clowns and foot-tapping toe curling “get your brogues on” dance floor swing “knees have hit nipples” goes the catch phrase while D&B breaks fill the room.
